Netflix has been testing advertisements for some subscribers by showing other content it has between certain series episodes. The famous company is also known for the phrase ‘Netflix and chill’ and arguably started the trend of binge watching shows.

Even though people have to pay a subscription fee to watch Netflix and would therefore not expect to see advertisements, the company has been trialling advertising. Some subscribers of Netflix who have experienced the disturbances of ads have taken to Twitter to complain.

One Twitter user wrote: ‘Hey @netflix putting ads for your other shows between an episode of something I am watching ruins what makes Netflix good.  It makes me want to switch to other services. Please stop.’

Another said: ‘I love @netflix and have had it for several years! But if they do ads even ones that I can skip, I will cancel my account.’

In response, Netflix provided a statement saying of the situation that:

“At Netflix, we conduct hundreds of tests every year so we can better understand what helps members more easily find something great to watch.

“A couple of years ago, we introduced video previews to the TV experience, because we saw that it significantly cut the time members spend browsing and helped them find something they would enjoy watching even faster.

“Since then, we have been experimenting even more with video based on personalised recommendations for shows and movies on the service or coming shortly, and continue to learn from our members.

“In this particular case, we are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster. It is important to note that a member is able to skip a video preview at any time if they are not interested.”
